Music

MUSIC

In this lesson you learn how to download music on to your computer for the use of background music for videos you will be creating later in the class.

1.  Open YOUTUBE.com and select a song you would like to download. Copy the URL of the song as it is playing.

2.  Open a new tab or a new window in your Internet browser. Open the website Offliberty.com. Offliberty is one of many sites that can take a YouTube video and convert it into an MP3 or MP4.

3. When the site opens post the URL of your video into the download box. You will have two options for downloading. Click the top option to save just the sound (music) (MP3).  Once the download is complete you can find it in a couple places. The first place to look is along the bottom of the screen, the second is in the download folder.
You are successful when the download has the suffix .mp3.

4. For this project, create a folder and entitle it 'music'. Place 6 song downloads into the folder.

5. Open your Google Drive and drag the folder with the songs into it.

6. Open your Classroom.Google.com and find the assignment entitled MUSIC and submit your work.

Why is Music Important?

Did you know that music making is part of what makes humans human? Every culture makes music. Not only that, every past culture has made music too. Musical instruments are amongst the oldest man-made objects ever found. For example, there are flutes around 37,000 years old and perhaps even older!

Compare this with reading and writing. The earliest forms of writing are no more than about 3500 years old. And many cultures of the world still do not read or write.

Or how about this? Scientists have recently discovered that music affects many parts of our brain very deeply (grown-ups can look at the book This is Your Brain On Music by Daniel Levitin to find out more). But you don’t need to be a scientist to understand that! Try singing ‘Happy Birthday’ or a Christmas song and you will understand. What do these tunes make you think of? How do they make you feel? You’ll be filled with all sorts of memories and feelings when you hear these tunes—many more than would if you simply said the words ‘birthday’ or ‘Christmas’.

Music Help Human to Express Themselves

Whether you are music enthusiast or not, the best way you can express your feelings, anger, love, passion, joy and other kinds of feelings is simply through music. It is rightly said that when words and letters failed the best option is music. You will be able to express the intent of your heart through music which ordinarily may not be possible for you to either do in words or letters.

So in the same way having music in the background of video brings emotion to the film. Most often the background music does not have words just melody's. The background sound is called a score.

Sound

SOUND

This project we will explore sound, find places to obtain  sounds and find places that we can get sound and store onto our computers to use later in video projects.

There exists many different forms of sound on the Internet. We are going to discuss 3 different types of sound files.
1. MIDI
2. WAV
3. MP3

I am sure you all are familiar with the .mp3 file. It is the standard of the Internet now, but not many years ago, before the .mp3 files wav and midi files ruled the Internet.

Definition of: MIDI: MIDI. (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) A standard protocol for the interchange of musical information between musical instruments, synthesizers and computers. MIDI was developed to allow the keyboard of one synthesizer to play notes generated by another.

Definition of: WAV.: A Wave file is an audio file format, created by Microsoft, that has become a standard PC audio file format for everything from system and game sounds to CD-quality audio. A Wave file is identified by a file name extension of WAV (.wav). Used primarily in PCs, the Wave file format has been accepted as a viable interchange medium for other computer platforms, such as Macintosh. This allows content developers to freely move audio files between platforms for processing, for example.
In addition to the uncompressed raw audio data, the Wave file format stores information about the file's number of tracks (mono or stereo), sample rate, and bit depth.

Definition of MP3:   MP3 is the name of the file extension and also the common name of the type of file for MPEG-1 audio layer 3. Today, it is a common audio format for consumer audio streaming and storage, and the standard for the transfer and playback of music on most digital audio players. Because MP3 files are small, they can easily be transferred across the Internet.

1.  For this assignment I would like you to download 7 sounds. One of the sounds must be in the WAV format, the rest can be in mp3.

1.Lightning
2. Applause
3. Background sound
4. An animal sound
5. A sound of your choice

2. One site that you will be able to get sound from is Sounddogs.com. There are many sites that offer sound. At Sounddogs once you find a sound that you want, simply click on the MP3 button while holding down the OPTION KEY on your keyboard.

3. Create a folder on your desktop and name it SOUNDS, place your downloaded sounds into the folder.

4. Open your Google Drive and place the SOUND folder with the sounds into the drive.

5. Open your Google Classroom and download the sounds into the Classroom.

Other sites with Sound:  Sound Bible,

Young Frankenstein

Young Frankenstein was movie produced by Mel Brooks an starring Gene Wilder in 1974. You all probably remember Gene Wilder for the movie "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" Mr. Wilder passed away on Aug 29th, 2016.

Later in this school year you will be asked to create a video that the final product will be in black and white.  I would like you to pay attention to the lighting used in making the movie of Young Frankenstein and how sound is used to create the "mood" to the different scenes.
